Vanessa Newman is an independent medical-scientific consultant with a background in the public and non-profit healthcare sectors, as well as the pharmaceutical industry. A native South African, Dr Newman has a keen interest in health equity and access, and the development of novel therapies to meet the increasing needs for high quality healthcare. After completing her undergraduate education at the Universities of Pretoria and Cape Town in South Africa, her career in medicine began as a volunteer field MD for the Red Cross in a remote HIV clinic in Zambia, which fuelled a PhD in immunology via the Bern University Hospital in Swizerland. After moving to Europe, Dr Newman joined Pharma in the rare disease space and, over the past 20 years, held various global positions in medical affairs and clinical operations. Her most recent roles at BioMarin Pharmaceuticals and, previously Sobi, led to a focus on novel therapies in haematology. Dr Newman is currently working with the WFH on the Gene Therapy Registry (GTR).
