Lochana Nanayakkara is a consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Barts Health NHS Trust, an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at QMUL School of Medicine and Dentistry and works part time as a Specialist Prosthodontist in a Private Practice in London.
Lochana has a special interest in the dental management of people with haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. She has been the Clinical Lead for Haemophilia at the Royal London Dental Hospital since 2003 and the Dental Lead for the North London Adult Haemophilia Network launched in 2014.
She has held World Federation of Haemophilia Dental Committee positions as Western European Representative (2012- 2014), Secretary (2014-2018) and Vice Chair (2018 – 2020 and is currently the elected Chair of the Dental Committee since 2020.
Lochana has a clinical interest in the use of Low-Level Laser Diode therapy to manage gingival inflammation and support haemostasis for people with severe bleeding disorders and gained a Fellowship in Lasers in Dentistry in 2018.
In addition to her clinical practice, Lochana has invested a significant proportion of her professional life to training postgraduate dentists and managing the delivery of training programmes within the NHS and in Higher Education Institutions. She was the Training Programe Director for Dental Core Training in NorthEast London from 2008 to 2018 and the Training Programe Director for Restorative Specialty training in London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex from 2013 to 2018.
She is the current Director of Dental Education at Barts Heath and Co- Director of the DClinDent programme in Prosthodontics at the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University London.
She has been a Specialty Advisor in Restorative Dentistry for the Royal College of Surgeons, England and in 2022, she was appointed to the role of Convenor of Dental Education for the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.
